In the late 1800s, Henry M. Terry was working on his father’s shipping vessel hauling seed oysters from the Eastern Shore to New York’s Great South Bay for Blue Point Oyster Company. While on a layover in Quinby, Virginia, he met his future wife, got married and settled down on the Eastern Shore. In 1903, he started his own oyster company, and the Sewansecott brand was born. Four generations and over 106 years later, the Terry family is still producing the quality ocean salt oysters and clams that made the Sewansecott brand so popular.
Today, our oysters and clams are hatchery produced from the best natural Virginia brood stock available, and then grown to market size in the pristine waters of Hog Island Bay, located within the 80 mile chain of undeveloped barrier islands of the Virginia Coast Reserve. This entire area used for oyster and clam grow out has been listed by the United Nations as one of “The Last Great Places” and is designated and protected as a United Nations Biosphere Reserve. Our sustainable harvesting methods reflect our dedication to ecological preservation. We strive to produce a quality, sustainable product that could be called organic if such a designation existed for seafood, but also tastes every bit as good as the story that goes with it. For over 106 years our products have been grown in harmony with nature in a grow out situation where we actually give back more than we take. Everything we do in the production of our products is nothing more than nature does on its own. No additives, no supplements, no chemicals, nothing but a natural process excelled in one of the most pristine environments in the world.
